BOOK PREMIERE – In the face of political and social crises that have shaken Belarus for (at least) two years – forcing many of the country’s intellectuals into exile – the Minsk-based Pflaŭmbaŭm Publishing House recently published the „Anthology of (female) Poets“. The Pflaŭmbaŭm Publishing House was founded by Belarusian Nobel laureate Svetlana Alexievich in 2019 and is devoted exclusively to women’s literature.
In a remarkable achievement of editing and publishing, the volume spotlights 60 Belarusian contemporary women poets. Editor Valzhyna Mort, herself an award-winning poet living in the United States, let her selection of the poems be guided by the thought that the volume ought to represent an imaginary space of encounter. Tonight, we want to give this encounter a real space: Six poets featured in the anthology will read their poems, speak with the publishers about writing and reading in Belarus today, and reveal what the volume means to them and the Belarusian literary scene as a whole.
The event will be interpreted Belarusian-to-German. A booklet with German translations of the poems will be published for the event.
