The poesiefestival berlin, organised by the Haus für Poesie, has become a member of the Versopolis platform this year. Versopolis is an alliance of European poetry festivals founded in 2014 with the aim of creating new opportunities for emerging European poets and is supported by the Creative Europe programme of the European Commission.
Every year, each member festival nominates two poets from its own country to the project and invites two poets nominated by the other members to its own festival. The nominees are authors who have already gained recognition in their home countries and through this platform can be given more visibility beyond the borders of their countries. Versopolis supports the poets’ mobility through guest appearances at different European festivals and the translation of selected works into English and other European languages. The poets’ work is also featured on the Versopolis webpage (versopolis.com), hosting a large poetry database with all the selected Versopolis poets as well as a detailed presentation of the translators and the festivals of the platform members.
The first two poets invited to the poesiefestival berlin via the Versopolis platform are Raymond Antrobus from the UK and Eduard Escoffet from Spain. Escoffet is a guest at the ZEBRA Poetry Film Club event (Tue 6/21). He will read poetry in Catalan, present a poetry film made with his participation and take part in a discussion. Antrobus reads at Weltklang – Night of Poetry (Fri 6/17) and is part of Poetry in Conversation: Raymond Antrobus – Can we disagree graciously? (Sun 6/19). In the area of poetic education on Monday (6/20), he participates in the Award Ceremony and Reading: Silence/Presence for young people and gives the Poetry Workshop: Silence/Presence.
The first two poets from Germany nominated by the poesiefestival berlin for the Versopolis platform are Nancy Hünger from Gotha and Alexandru Bulucz from Berlin. A selection of their poems in the original German and in English translation as well as an essay about their work will soon be available on the Versopolis webpage. The poets are looking forward to invitations from the platform’s festivals.
