The KNM Quartet (Theodor Flindell and N.N. on violin, Kirstin Maria Pientka on viola, Cosima Gerhardt on violoncello) was founded in 2004 as the string quartet of the ensemble KNM Berlin and since then has developed a unique repertoire. In addition to the full-length In iij. noct. by Georg Friedrich Haasgaben and the highly acclaimed performance of Hugues Dufourt’s second string quartet Uneasyness, the musicians played the world premiere of Beat Furrer’s fifty-minute third string quartet. The CD recording of this work was awarded the German Record Critics’ Prize. Furthermore, quartets by Helmut Lachenmann, Alvin Lucier, Giacinto Scelsi, Marco Stroppa and Ivan Wyschnegradsky found their way into their repertoire. In 2018/19, the KNM Quartet, together with Berthold Tuercke, conducted a three-part series of lecture-concerts featuring works of the 2nd Viennese School from the perspective of Rudolf Kolisch’s performance practice at the Berlin Institute for Music Research. The most recent CD recording with chamber music works by Christophe Bertrand was again awarded the German Record Critics’ Prize in 2021.
